प्रमूढो 5 भूत् प्रजासगे तपस्तेपे महत् ततः । तपसा महता युक्त: सो5थ स्रष्टूं प्रचक्रसे,ऐसा कहकर भगवान् मत्स्य क्षणभरमें अदृश्य हो गये। तदनन्तर स्वयं वैवस्वत मनुको प्रजाओंकी सृष्टि करनेकी इच्छा हुई, किंतु प्रजाकी सृष्टि करनेमें उनकी बुद्धि मोहाच्छन्न हो गयी थी। तब उन्होंने बड़ी भारी तपस्या की और महान् तपोबलसे सम्पन्न होकर उन्होंने सृष्टिका कार्य प्रारम्भ किया
pramūḍho 'bhūt prajāsarge tapas tepe mahat tataḥ | tapasā mahatā yuktaḥ so 'tha sraṣṭuṃ pracakrase ||
马尔坎德耶说道：当摩奴立意创生众生之时，其心智为迷妄所蔽，起初茫然不知所措。于是他修行大苦行。凭借由强烈苦行（tapās）所生之力，他便开始了创生之业。此段旨在昭示：当心为迷惑遮蔽时，严持自制与专注精进能复得澄明，使人得以尽其对世间之责。
