Sātyaki’s Call for Intervention and Yudhiṣṭhira’s Vow-Bound Restraint

sātyakine kathā—baladeva uvāca: na eṣa kālo niṣīdya vilapitum; idānīṃ yad agre kartavyaṃ tat sarvair asmābhiḥ sametya kriyatām. yady api mahārājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ asmān kiṃcid na bravīti, tathāpi vayam idānīṃ vṛthā kālaṃ na nītvā kauravān yathocitaṃ prativacanaṃ dātum arhāmaḥ. ye nāthavanto ’dya bhavanti loke te nātmanā karma samārabhante; teṣāṃ tu kāryeṣu bhavanti nāthāḥ śibyādayo rāma yathā yayāteḥ.

Educational Q&A

Do not remain passive in grief when action is required. Even if a leader is silent, allies who are committed to dharma should unite, deliberate, and respond appropriately. Strength in righteous action often comes through supportive networks—friends, kin, and allies—rather than solitary effort.

Balarāma addresses Sātyaki, urging him (and their side) to stop lamenting and to act together. He notes that Yudhiṣṭhira may not be issuing commands, yet the group should still move decisively and give the Kauravas a proper response, illustrating the point with an example involving Yayāti and his descendants such as Śibi.
