Sacred acts require proper qualification and correct ritual procedure; even a well-intended action can fail if done without the appropriate sanctifying rite. The verse highlights the ethical discipline of reverence, restraint, and adherence to dharma in approaching holy objects.
Lomaśa, guiding the Bharata prince (addressed as Ājamīḍha’s descendant), offers to recite an auspicious benediction so the prince may ascend a sacred altar. He warns that if the altar is touched by an ordinary mortal without the proper sanctification, it will disappear by sinking into the sea.
