Earth is not merely property to be ‘given’ away; she is a sacred trust. The verse highlights the ethical burden of human rule: if rulers act without dharma, the very ground of life ‘withdraws’—symbolizing ecological, social, and moral collapse.
Lomaśa narrates that when the Earth was ‘bestowed’ (entrusted) to a human, she immediately became distressed and angrily appealed to the Lord of the worlds, warning that being handed to mortals would be pointless because she would sink to the nether regions.
