Kaṇva’s Counsel on Impermanent Power; Opening of the Mātali–Guṇakeśī Narrative

bharataśreṣṭha! yadi tavedaṃ icchā bhavet yathā asmāsu bhedo na syāt, atraiva ca tvaṃ svakalyaṇaṃ manyase, tadā sandhiṃ kṛtvā śānto bhava yuddhe ca manaḥ mā kṛthāḥ. bhavatāṃ ca kuruśreṣṭha kulaṃ bahumataṃ bhuvi; tat tathaivāstu bhadraṃ te; svārtham evopacintaya.

Educational Q&A

Choose reconciliation over war when unity and genuine welfare are possible; protect the honor of the lineage by reflecting on true self-interest aligned with peace and stability.

Rama addresses a Kuru/Bharata noble, urging him to prevent a split within their group, to conclude a peace settlement, and to refrain from turning his mind toward battle, emphasizing the public esteem of the Kuru lineage.
