Kṛṣṇa at Duryodhana’s House: Refusal of Hospitality and Departure to Vidura (कृष्णस्य धार्तराष्ट्रनिवेशनगमनम्)
vikramādhigatā hārthāḥ kṣatradharmeṇa jīvataḥ | mano manuṣyasya sadā prīṇanti puruṣottama ||
For one committed to kṣatriya-dharma, the ethically appropriate means of livelihood is wealth earned through courage and rightful exertion; such ‘valor-won’ wealth alone brings lasting inner satisfaction, unlike gains obtained by ignoble or improper methods.
In Vaiśampāyana’s narration, a moral point is being stated to ‘Puruṣottama’: the warrior’s life is to be sustained by the duties of his station, and the mind finds contentment when prosperity is acquired through legitimate martial prowess rather than through dishonorable conduct.
