Omens and Reception During Keśava’s Departure
etan mahat prekṣaṇīyaṃ draṣṭuṃ gacchāma keśava | dharmārthasahitā vācaḥ śrotum icchāma mādhava ||
The verse values speech that is “dharmārtha-sahitā”—words that unite righteousness (dharma) with sound purpose and practical good (artha). It implies that counsel should be ethically grounded and also meaningful in outcome, not merely persuasive or emotional.
The speaker (as framed by Vaiśampāyana’s narration) addresses Kṛṣṇa by his epithets Keśava and Mādhava, urging him to come and witness an important event and expressing a desire to hear principled, purposeful words—signaling a transition toward a significant audience, counsel, or deliberation.
