Udyoga-parva Adhyāya 50 — Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Appraisal of Bhīmasena (भीमसेनभयवर्णनम्)
na tu manye vighātāya jñānaṃ duḥkhasya sañjaya | bhavaty atibalaṃ hot taj jñānasthāpy upaghātakam ||
The verse highlights a moral-psychological insight: intellectual knowledge alone may not dissolve suffering; when grief becomes overwhelming, it can eclipse discernment itself, impairing judgment and ethical clarity.
In the Udyoga Parva’s pre-war deliberations, Dhṛtarāṣṭra speaks to Sañjaya in a mood of anxiety and sorrow, reflecting on how his distress has grown so strong that it threatens to overpower even sound understanding.
