राजन्! आपका कल्याण हो
rājan! tava kalyāṇaṁ bhavatu; manuṣyeṣu sadā pañcavidhaṁ balaṁ bhavati, tac chṛṇu. yat bāhubala-nāma prathamaṁ balaṁ, tad nikṛṣṭaṁ balaṁ ucyate; mantri-lābhaḥ dvitīyaṁ balam; dhana-lābhaṁ tṛtīyaṁ balaṁ manīṣiṇaḥ prāhuḥ; rājan, yat pitṛ-paitāmaha-prāptaṁ manuṣyasya svābhāvikaṁ balaṁ (kuṭumba-balam), tad “abhijāta”-nāma caturthaṁ balam. bhārata! yena etāni sarvāṇi balāni saṅgṛhyante, yaś ca sarveṣu baleṣu śreṣṭhatamaṁ balam, tat pañcamaṁ “buddhi-balam” iti kathyate. mahate yo’pakārāya narasya prabhaven naraḥ, tena vairaṁ samāsajya dūrastho’smīti nāśvaset.
毗度罗说道:“大王,愿你安泰。人世间恒有五种力量——请听。第一是身力、臂力,此为最下之力;第二是得贤臣与良谋;第三,智者称之为得财;第四是由父祖血脉与家族扶持而来的天赋之力,名为‘出身之力’(abhijāta)。然而,婆罗多啊,能统摄并驱使这一切力量、且凌驾诸力之上的,是第五种:智慧之力。因此,若有人足以对他人造成重大祸害,切莫轻率与之结怨,继而又因自信‘我在远处,他奈何不了我’而松懈。”
विदुर उवाच
Vidura ranks forms of power and asserts that intellect (buddhi) is the highest because it gathers and directs all other resources—physical force, ministers, wealth, and family backing. He also warns against complacent hostility: do not assume safety merely because you are ‘far away’ from someone capable of great harm.
In Udyoga Parva, Vidura counsels King Dhṛtarāṣṭra during the tense pre-war diplomacy. He offers practical and ethical guidance on governance and personal conduct, emphasizing strategic intelligence and caution in dealing with dangerous adversaries.
