Udyoga-parva Adhyāya 34 — Vidura’s Counsel on Deliberation, Speech-Discipline, and Dharmic Kingship
divasenaiva tat kuryād yena rātrau sukhaṁ vaset | aṣṭamāsena tat kuryād yena varṣāḥ sukhaṁ vaset ||
Do necessary work at the proper time: complete what is needed in the day to ensure peaceful rest at night, and prepare during the eight dry months so the rainy season passes without distress. It teaches foresight, timely effort, and avoidance of preventable suffering.
Vidura is delivering niti (practical-ethical counsel) in the Udyoga Parva, instructing the listener on wise conduct and preparation. The verse uses everyday time-cycles—day/night and dry months/monsoon—to illustrate disciplined planning as a mark of good judgment.
