Bhishma Accepts Command and Enumerates Kaurava Strength
sañjaya uvāca | bhīmasenas tataḥ vākyam bhūya āha nṛpātmajam | tad-anantaraṃ bhīmasenena punaḥ rāja-kumāra ulūkāya idaṃ vacaḥ uktam— “ulūka! tvaṃ durbuddhiḥ pāpātmā śaṭhaḥ kapaṭī pāpī tathā durācārī; duryodhanāya ca mama idaṃ vacanaṃ api nivedaya।”

The verse highlights the ethical collapse that precedes war: when deceit and immoral conduct dominate counsel and diplomacy, speech becomes accusatory and relationships harden. It implicitly contrasts dharmic conduct with the traits Bhima condemns—deceit, hypocrisy, and corrupt behavior—showing how adharma fuels escalation.
In the Udyoga Parva’s pre-war negotiations, Uluka has come as a Kaurava messenger. Bhima responds fiercely, denouncing Uluka’s character and instructing him to carry Bhima’s words back to Duryodhana, intensifying the hostile exchange that signals the nearing inevitability of battle.
