Kṛṣṇa’s Conciliatory Address to Karṇa

मित्रध्रुग्‌ दुष्टभावश्च नास्तिको5थानृजु: शठ: । न सत्सु लभते पूजां यज्ञे मूर्ख इवागत:

mitradhruk duṣṭabhāvaś ca nāstiko 'thānṛjuḥ śaṭhaḥ | na satsu labhate pūjāṁ yajñe mūrkha ivāgataḥ ||

毗湿摩说道:“背叛朋友、心怀恶念、否认神圣(不信者)、又狡曲欺诈之人,永不得在贤善之中受敬。正如愚昧的婆罗门闯入祭祀而不获尊崇,恶毒而无信之徒在善人之会中也得不到真正的尊重。”

Educational Q&A

Honor in the company of the virtuous is not obtained by status or mere presence; it depends on character. Betraying friends, cultivating malice, rejecting dharma, and practicing crooked deceit make a person unworthy of respect among good people.

In Udyoga Parva, Bhīṣma offers counsel on conduct and the qualities that lead to esteem or disgrace. Here he uses a ritual simile—an unworthy, foolish attendee at a yajña gains no regard—to stress that the wicked and deceitful similarly receive no honor among the righteous.
