इनके एक सुन्दरी कन्या है, जिसके रूपकी समानता भूमण्डलमें कहीं नहीं है। उसका नाम है गुणकेशी। वह सत्य, शील और सदगुणोंसे सम्पन्न है ।। तस्यास्य यत्नाच्चरतस्त्रैलोक्यममरथ़ुते । सुमुखो भवतः: पौत्रो रोचते दुहितुः पति:,देवोपम कान्तिवाले नागराज! ये मातलि बड़े प्रयत्नसे कनन््याके लिये वर ढूँढ़नेके निमित्त तीनों लोकोंमें विचरते हुए यहाँ आये हैं। आपका पौत्र सुमुख इन्हें अपनी कन्याका पति होनेयोग्य प्रतीत हुआ है; उसीको इन्होंने पसंद किया है
tasyāsy yatnāc caratas trailokyam amarārthute | sumukho bhavataḥ pautro rocate duhituḥ patiḥ || devopama-kāntivāle nāgarāja! ye mātaliḥ baḍe prayatnase kanyāke liye vara ḍhūṁḍhane ke nimitta tīnoṁ lokoṁ meṁ vicarate hue yahāṁ āye haiṁ | āp kā pautra sumukha inheṁ apnī kanyā kā pati hone-yogya pratīta huā hai; usī ko inhoṁne pasand kiyā hai | (kanyā: guṇakeśī—satya-śīla-sadguṇa-sampannā)
那罗陀说道:“马塔利为寻觅相称的女婿,勤勉游行三界,正为此事来到此处。噢,龙蛇之王!你的外孙苏穆迦在他眼中正是配得上其女的夫婿。其光辉如同诸天神明,马塔利已择定于他。”
नारद उवाच
The verse highlights dharmic matchmaking: a spouse is sought not merely by power or wealth but by suitability (rocate) grounded in virtue, lineage, and godlike conduct—suggesting that marriage is an ethical alliance meant to uphold social and cosmic order.
Nārada informs the Nāga-king that Mātali, Indra’s charioteer, has been traveling across the three worlds to find a groom for his daughter (Guṇakeśī). Having arrived among the Nāgas, he judges the Nāga-king’s grandson Sumukha to be the appropriate husband and selects him.
