Chapter 86
विश्वासयेत परांश्ैव विश्वसेच्च न कस्यचित् । पुत्रेष्वपि हि राजेन्द्र विश्वासों न प्रशस्यते
viśvāsayet parāṁś caiva viśvasec ca na kasyacit | putreṣv api hi rājendra viśvāso na praśasyate ||
毗湿摩说道:“君王当使众人信服于己,然自身不可尽信于任何人。噫,诸王之最!即便对自己的儿子,也不宜全然倚赖、毫无保留地信任。”
भीष्म उवाच
In rājadharma, a ruler must cultivate public confidence to govern effectively, but should remain strategically cautious—avoiding unquestioning trust even toward close relations—so that the kingdom is not endangered by misplaced reliance.
During the Śānti Parva instruction on rājadharma, Bhīṣma advises Yudhiṣṭhira on practical ethics of rulership, emphasizing political prudence: win others’ trust, yet do not become vulnerable through indiscriminate trust.
