Chapter 72 — Royal Duty: protection of subjects, taxation, punishment, and appointments
आर्जवेन च सम्पन्नो धृत्या बुद्धया च भारत । यथार्थ प्रतिगृह्लीयात् कामक्रोधौ च वर्जयेत्,भरतनन्दन! राजाको चाहिये कि वह सरल स्वभावसे सम्पन्न हो, धैर्य तथा बुद्धिके बलसे सत्यको ही ग्रहण करे और काम-क्रोधका परित्याग कर दे
ārjavena ca sampanno dhṛtyā buddhyā ca bhārata | yathārthaṃ pratigṛhṇīyāt kāmakrodhau ca varjayet, bharatanandana ||
毗湿摩说道:“噢,婆罗多啊,君王当具备坦率正直;依凭坚定与明智的判断,只应接受真实如实之事;并当舍弃欲与怒,噢,婆罗多族之欢悦者。”
भीष्म उवाच
A ruler should cultivate straightforwardness and, guided by fortitude and discernment, adhere to truth while renouncing the destabilizing impulses of desire and anger.
In the Śānti Parva dialogue on kingship and dharma, Bhīṣma instructs Yudhiṣṭhira on the inner virtues required of a king—especially truthful judgment and mastery over kāma and krodha.
