Kṣātra-dharma as the Public Foundation of Dharma (क्षात्रधर्म-प्रशंसा)
आनयित्वा यथापाठं विप्रेभ्यो दत्तदक्षिण: । संग्रामे विजयं प्राप्य तथाल्पं यदि वा बहु
ānayitvā yathāpāṭhaṃ viprebhyo dattadakṣiṇaḥ | saṃgrāme vijayaṃ prāpya tathālpaṃ yadi vā bahu ||
毗湿摩说道:“当依诵读之法使吠陀诵念分毫不差,并向婆罗门奉上应得的祭资(dakṣiṇā);其后——无论战场所得之胜是小是大——(君王都当以达摩之道而行)。”就上下文而言,毗湿摩是在阐明君王的伦理生涯:严谨学习与祭仪责任、以慷慨供养扶持祭司阶层、护持臣民,并以克制之心运用军事胜利,使之成为维系秩序的手段,而非纵欲自享的借口。
भीष्म उवाच
A king’s power must be anchored in dharma: perform rites correctly, honor learned Brahmins with proper dakṣiṇā, and treat military victory—small or great—as a responsibility to uphold order and protect subjects, not as a license for arrogance.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction on rājanīti and dharma, Bhishma continues advising the ruler: after ensuring correct Vedic procedure and rewarding priests, the king, having won in war, should proceed with disciplined, duty-centered governance.
