Chapter 57: Constant Royal Vigilance, Primacy of Protection, and Principles of Dismissal
rājānaṃ prathamaṃ vindet tato bhāryā tato dhanam | rājany asati lokasya kuto bhāryā kuto dhanam ||
Bhishma teaches that stable, righteous governance is a prerequisite for household life and prosperity: without a protector-king and public order, personal aims like marriage and wealth become insecure and ethically untenable.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction on rajadharma, Bhishma advises Yudhishthira by stressing the foundational role of kingship in safeguarding society; he frames it as a practical and moral sequence—first secure rule and protection, then family formation and economic accumulation.
