Educational Q&A

The verse emphasizes that true engagement with sacred tradition involves seeking the inner meaning (artha) of both śruti (the Vedas) and itihāsa (the Mahābhārata), and recognizing their authority as grounded in a divine source (Nārāyaṇa).

Vaiśampāyana reports that the listeners, during a conversation, asked the eminent sage Vyāsa to explain the purport of the Vedas and the Mahābhārata, and to recount how his own birth is connected to Nārāyaṇa.
