Āścarya-kathana: Brāhmaṇa–Nāga Dialogue on Sūrya (Vivasvat) and the ‘Second Sun’ Phenomenon

भगवानके भक्तोंद्वारा कभी केवल एक व्यूह--भगवान्‌ वासुदेवकी, कभी दो व्यूह-- वासुदेव और संकर्षणकी, कभी प्रद्युम्मसहित तीन व्यूहोंकी और कभी अनिरुद्धसहित चार व्यूहोंकी उपासना देखी जाती है ।।

bhagavānake bhaktairdvarā kadācid kevalaṃ eka-vyūhaḥ—bhagavān vāsudevasya, kadācid dvi-vyūhaḥ—vāsudeva-saṅkarṣaṇayoḥ, kadācit pradyumnasahitaṃ tri-vyūhaṃ, kadācid aniruddhasahitaṃ catur-vyūhaṃ ceti upāsanā dṛśyate. harir eva hi kṣetrajño nirmamo niṣkalaḥ tathā | jīvaś ca sarvabhūteṣu pañca-bhūta-guṇātigaḥ ||

毗舍波耶那说:在世尊的奉献者之中,有人只礼敬一重毗优哈——唯独婆苏提婆;有人礼敬二重——婆苏提婆与僧迦罗沙那;有人礼敬三重——再加普拉丢摩那;也有人礼敬四重——再加阿尼卢陀。因为唯有哈利是“知田者”(kṣetrajña),内在的见证者;无执取、无分割。祂以有情之我住于一切众生之中,超越由五大所生的诸种性质。

The Lord (Hari/Vāsudeva) is the inner witness (kṣetrajña) present in all beings, untouched by possessiveness and division, and transcending the qualities that arise from elemental nature; devotion may approach Him through one, two, three, or four vyūha-manifestations.

Vaiśampāyana reports a doctrinal observation: different devotees worship the Supreme through varying configurations of the vyūhas—Vāsudeva alone, or together with Saṅkarṣaṇa, then with Pradyumna, and finally with Aniruddha—while affirming that the same Hari is the universal indwelling knower.
