Prāyaścitta and Contextual Non-Culpability
sāvitrīm apy adhīyīta śucau deśe mitāśanaḥ | ahiṃso mandako jalpo mucyate sarvakilbiṣaiḥ ||
Sacred recitation (Sāvitrī/Gāyatrī) bears fruit when supported by ethical self-discipline: purity of place, moderation in food, complete non-violence, and restrained speech. Such integrated practice leads to purification and release from sin.
In the didactic setting of Śānti Parva, Vyāsa instructs on a practical means of purification: the disciplined study/japa of the Sāvitrī mantra, framed as an ethical regimen rather than mere ritual.
