धर्मस्य बहुद्वारत्वम् — Nārada’s Audience with Indra (Śānti-parva 340)
नावासुदेवभक्ताय त्वया देयं कथंचन । नरेश्वर! इस प्रकार यह ऋषिसम्बन्धी आख्यान परम्परासे प्राप्त हुआ है। जो भगवान् वासुदेवका भक्त न हो, उसे किसी तरह भी इसका उपदेश तुम्हें नहीं देना चाहिये || १२५३ || (आख्यानमुतन्तमं चेदं श्रावयेद् यः सदा नृप । तदैव मनुजो भक्त: शुचिर्भूत्वा समाहित: ।।
nā vāsudeva-bhaktāya tvayā deyaṃ kathaṃcana | nareśvara! evaṃ ṛṣi-sambandhī ākhyāna-paramparayā prāptaṃ | yo bhagavān vāsudevasya bhakto na bhavati, tasmai kathaṃcid api asyopadeśas tvayā na dātavyaḥ || (ākhyānam uttamaṃ cedam śrāvayed yaḥ sadā nṛpa | tadaiva manujo bhaktaḥ śucir bhūtvā samāhitaḥ || prāpnuyād acirād rājan viṣṇulokaṃ sanātanam |) matto 'nyāni ca te rājann upākhyāna-śatāni vai
毗湿摩说道:“大王啊,切不可将此教诲传授给不敬信婆苏提婆(Vāsudeva)之人。如此,这一与诸圣仙相系的叙事,乃由不绝的传统传承而来。凡非皈依奉敬至尊婆苏提婆者,你都不应以任何方式为其宣说。并且,君王啊,凡常常诵读此最胜圣传,或令他人得闻者,必成虔信之人——身心清净,意念专一——不久便得至毗湿奴(Viṣṇu)之永恒天界。再者,大王啊,我还有数百则别样的训诫故事要讲与你听。”
भीष्म उवाच
Sacred instruction is to be entrusted only to those who have devotion to Vāsudeva; faithful hearing/recitation of such a narrative purifies the mind and leads to the eternal realm of Vishnu.
Bhishma, addressing the king, concludes an inherited rishi-tradition account by warning against teaching it to non-devotees, praises the spiritual fruit of regularly reciting it, and then signals that he has many more instructive tales to relate.
