The verse foregrounds śānti (tranquility) through a harmonious natural soundscape. In the Shānti Parva’s ethical atmosphere, such imagery supports the ideal that inner and outer order—calm speech, restrained conduct, and a settled mind—are conducive to dharma and reflective understanding.
Bhīṣma is describing a serene mountain setting: multicolored peacocks calling, flocks of royal swans, and dark cuckoos filling the region with gentle sounds, while apsarases move about—painting an idyllic, auspicious scene.
