Janaka–Sulabhā Dialogue on Mokṣa and Non-attachment
प्रोक्तो बुद्धश्न तत््वेन यथाश्रुतिनिदर्शनात् । नानात्वैकत्वमेतावद् द्रष्टव्यं शास्त्रदर्शनात्
prokto buddhaś ca tattvena yathāśruti-nidarśanāt | nānātvaikatvam etāvad draṣṭavyaṃ śāstra-darśanāt, niṣpāpa nareśa |
婆悉吒说道:“依循吠陀启示(śruti)所示之义,如经中所闻,我已如实阐明‘觉者’(buddha)的真实本性。从诸论典(śāstra)的立场看,只须明白这一点:灵我之多样与一体,皆应以此方式观见。无罪之王啊,当以此教为经论之镜,调和众多与一而不致迷乱。”
वसिष्ठ उवाच
That scripture (Śruti/Śāstra) provides a valid framework to understand how the self can be spoken of as both many (nānātva) and one (ekatva), and that the ‘buddha’ principle is to be known in its true nature through Vedic indication.
Vasiṣṭha is concluding or reinforcing an instruction to a king, summarizing that he has explained the relevant principles as grounded in Śruti, and urging the king to adopt the śāstric viewpoint to reconcile apparent plurality with underlying unity.
