Śoka-śamana: Kṛṣṇa’s Consolation and Nārada’s Exempla to Sṛñjaya
Chapter 29
सूंजय! वे पूर्वोक्त चारों बातोंमें तुमसे बहुत बढ़े-चढ़े थे और तुम्हारे पुत्रसे अधिक पुण्यात्मा थे, जब वे भी कालसे न बच सके तो दूसरोंके लिये क्या कहा जा सकता है? अतः तुम अपने पुत्रके लिये शोक न करो ।।
Sūñjaya! te pūrvoktacāro bātōṁ meṁ tumse bahut baṛhe-caṛhe the aura tumhāre putra se adhika puṇyātmā the; jab ve bhī kāla se na baca sake to dūsaroṁ ke liye kyā kahā jā sakatā hai? ataḥ tuma apane putra ke liye śoka na karo. Dilīpaṁ ca mahātmānaṁ mṛtaṁ Sūñjaya śuśruma; yasya karmāṇi bhūrīṇi kathayanti dvijātayaḥ.
风神伐由说道:“苏阇耶啊,先前所说之人,在四事上远胜于你,功德亦过于你的儿子。若连他们都不能逃脱时劫,又何况他人?故莫为你的儿子哀伤。又闻苏阇耶,那位大魂的帝王提利婆亦已逝去——然而诸‘二生者’至今仍传诵他众多的高贵功业。”
वायुदेव उवाच
Even the most virtuous and accomplished cannot escape Kāla (Time/Death); therefore excessive grief is misguided. One should accept mortality and steady the mind, honoring virtue through remembrance of righteous deeds rather than lamentation.
Vāyudeva counsels the grieving king Sūñjaya not to mourn his son, arguing from the inevitability of death. He reinforces the point by citing the famed king Dilīpa: though he died, his abundant righteous deeds are still celebrated by learned twice-born reciters.
