Ethical Restraint, Mortality, and Karma
etad brahman vijānāmi mahat kṛtvā tapo 'vyayam | tena nārada samprāpto na māṃ śokaḥ prabādhate ||
True understanding gained through sustained spiritual discipline (tapas) produces inner steadiness: even when grief-causing situations arise, sorrow does not dominate the mind.
A speaker addresses a Brahmin and then Nārada, stating that through great, imperishable austerity he has attained a certain knowledge, and as a result he remains unshaken by grief despite circumstances that would normally provoke it.
