Ethical Restraint, Mortality, and Karma
priyaṃ hi harṣajananaṃ harṣa utsekavardhanaḥ | utseko narakāyaiva tasmāt tān saṃtyajāmy aham ||

The verse warns of a moral chain: attachment to what is pleasing gives rise to joy; joy can inflate pride; pride becomes spiritually ruinous. Hence one should renounce the sequence—clinging to the dear object, the intoxicating delight, and the resulting arrogance.
In the didactic setting of the Śānti Parva, the speaker presents a reflective ethical conclusion: recognizing how pleasant attachments can culminate in destructive pride, he declares his resolve to abandon these three causes.
