Adhyāya 284: Tapas as a Corrective to Household Attachment
Parāśara’s Instruction
na rākṣasāḥ piśācā vā na bhūtā na vināyakāḥ | vighnaṃ kuryur gehe tasya yatrāyaṃ paṭhyate stavaḥ ||
Regular recitation of a sacred hymn (stava) is portrayed as a dharmic safeguard: it prevents harmful or obstructive forces from disturbing the household, emphasizing the ethical value of disciplined devotional practice.
Bhīṣma is describing the fruit (phalaśruti) of reciting a particular stava: wherever it is read, beings associated with fear, affliction, and impediments—rākṣasas, piśācas, bhūtas, and vināyakas—are said to be unable to cause vighna (obstacles).
