Adhyāya 284: Tapas as a Corrective to Household Attachment
Parāśara’s Instruction
dakṣa evam uktvā patnyā pārṣadaiś ca sahito 'mita-parākramī mahādevaḥ tatraivāntarhitaḥ || dakṣa-proktaṃ stavam imaṃ kīrtayed yaḥ śṛṇoti vā | na aśubhaṃ prāpnuyāt kiñcid dīrgham āyur avāpnuyāt ||
The verse presents a phalaśruti: reverent recitation or even hearing of a properly uttered hymn (here, Daksha’s praise) is said to ward off inauspicious outcomes and support well-being and longevity, emphasizing the ethical-religious value of devotion and attentive listening.
After speaking to Daksha, Mahadeva—accompanied by his consort and attendants—vanishes from that place. The narration then states the promised fruit of Daksha’s hymn: reciters or listeners are protected from misfortune and gain long life.
