Adhyāya 283: Varṇa-vṛtti, Nyāya-ārjana, and the Decline-and-Restoration of Dharma (वर्णवृत्तिः न्यायार्जनं च)

(महामुनि दधीचि भी उस यज्ञमण्डपमें उपस्थित थे। उन्होंने देखा कि देवता और दानव आदिका समाज तो खूब जुटा हुआ है; परंतु भगवान्‌ शंकर दिखायी नहीं देते हैं। जान पड़ता है उनका आवाहन नहीं किया गया है। इससे उनके मनमें बड़ा दुःख हुआ।) उन सब देवताओंको वहाँ उपस्थित देख दधीचि क्रोधमें भर गये और बोले--'सज्जनो! जिसमें भगवान्‌ शिवकी पूजा नहीं होती है

mohān na paśyanti vināśaṃ paryupasthitam | upasthitaṃ mahāghoraṃ na budhyante mahādhvare ||

为迷妄所蔽,他们看不见那已逼近的毁灭。在这场大祭(大牺牲)之中,极其可怖的灾厄已临近在前,他们却仍不觉悟。(就其语境而言,达提奇见诸神云集而湿婆未被如法召请与礼敬,遂哀叹:无湿婆之仪既非真祭,亦非正法,并警告此等怠慢必招覆灭。)
