युधिछिर उवाच
The verse highlights that dharma, true discernment (vijñāna), and devotion (bhakti) can shine even in someone regarded as an enemy. Ethical excellence is not confined to one’s social label or side in a conflict; it is measured by inner qualities.
Within the Śānti Parva’s Mokṣa-dharma discussions, Yudhiṣṭhira addresses the elder teacher (Bhīṣma) with wonder, pointing to Vṛtra’s extraordinary righteousness, knowledge, and devotion to Viṣṇu—setting up a reflection on Vṛtra’s character and teachings (the Vṛtra-gītā context).
