Adhyāya 270 — Yudhiṣṭhira’s inquiry on saṃnyāsa; Bhīṣma on calculable time, tamas, and karma

Vṛtra–Uśanā exemplum begins

तत्पश्चात्‌ उस श्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मणने अपने निकट अगल-बगलमें रखे हुए बहुत-से सूक्ष्म चीर (वल्कल आदि) देखे। इससे उसके मनमें बड़ा खेद एवं वैराग्य हुआ ।।

brāhmaṇa uvāca | ayaṁ na sukṛtaṁ vetti ko nv anyo vetsyate kṛtam | gacchāmi vanam evāhaṁ varaṁ dharmeṇa jīvitum ||

随后,那位最胜的婆罗门看见自己近旁左右放着许多细薄的衣物——如树皮衣(valkala)等。见此情景,他心中生起深切的悔恨与离欲。婆罗门在心里说道:“他既不识我所作之功德,又有谁能明白此举?我当入林而去——宁可依正法而活。”于是,他断绝对世间称许的期待,决意以持法的清净生活自养。
