Adhyāya 270 — Yudhiṣṭhira’s inquiry on saṃnyāsa; Bhīṣma on calculable time, tamas, and karma
Vṛtra–Uśanā exemplum begins
तब मणिभद्रने कहा--कुण्डधार! सब देवता तुमपर और इस ब्राह्मणपर भी बहुत प्रसन्न हैं। यह धर्मात्मा होगा और इसकी बुद्धि धर्ममें ही लगी रहेगी ।।
tato maṇibhadra uvāca—kuṇḍadhāra! sarve devāḥ tvayi asmin brāhmaṇe ca paramaṃ prītāḥ. ayaṃ dharmātmā bhaviṣyati, asya ca buddhir dharme eva niyoktā bhaviṣyati. tataḥ prīto jaladharaḥ kṛtakāryo yudhiṣṭhira, īpsitaṃ manaso labdhvā varam anyaiḥ sudurlabham; yudhiṣṭhira, evaṃ manorathasiddhaḥ sa meghaḥ paramaprīto babhūva.
于是摩尼跋陀罗说道:“噢,昆达陀罗!诸天对你极为欢喜——对这位婆罗门亦复如是。他将成为具正法之心者,其慧解亦将恒常安住于达摩。”于是,噢,郁提施提罗,那云(持水者,jaladhara)既已成就其事,又得其心所愿之赐——此赐对他人极难获得——便圆满称意,欢欣不已。
मणिभद्र उवाच
Divine favor is linked to dharmic disposition: when one’s character is righteous (dharmātmā) and one’s intellect remains anchored in dharma (buddhir dharme), the gods are said to be pleased, and auspicious outcomes—symbolized by a hard-to-obtain boon—follow.
Maṇibhadra addresses Kuṇḍadhāra, declaring that the gods are delighted with him and with a certain brāhmaṇa, predicting the brāhmaṇa’s steadfast commitment to dharma. Then, in Yudhiṣṭhira’s hearing, the cloud (jaladhara/megha) is described as satisfied and joyful after obtaining its long-desired, rare boon and completing its purpose.
