Kapila and Syūmaraśmi on Renunciation, Householder Support, and Epistemic Authority

The verse frames a dharma-discussion where ethical wisdom is not confined to ascetics: a householder (Tuladhara) can articulate profound moral insight, prompting the ascetic Jajali to respond thoughtfully. It introduces the theme that true dharma is measured by conduct and discernment, not merely by outward status.
Bhishma narrates to the king that after Tuladhara’s statement, Jajali—renowned for japa—replies. This verse functions as a transition into Jajali’s response within the Jajali–Tuladhara dialogue on dharma.
