evaṁ buddhvā naraḥ sarva-bhūtānām āgatiṁ gatiṁ | samavekṣya ca vaiṣamyaṁ labhate śamam uttamam ||
True peace (śama) arises from clear understanding of saṁsāra—the repeated coming and going of beings—and from thoughtful reflection on the unequal conditions of life. This insight reduces attachment, envy, and agitation, leading to inner equanimity.
In the didactic setting of the Śānti Parva, Vyāsa delivers instruction on wisdom and mental pacification. The verse summarizes a contemplative method: comprehend the cycle of beings’ destinies and examine worldly disparities, thereby attaining supreme tranquillity.
