Enduring renown and heavenly attainment are linked to dharmic life: generosity (dāna), sacred duty through sacrifice (yajña), and responsible continuation of society/lineage through progeny (prajā-sarga). These are presented as pillars of merit that outlast one’s lifetime.
Vyāsa is describing a group previously mentioned in the chapter, praising their lasting fame on earth and stating the causes of their ascent to heaven—namely their practice of charity, performance of sacrifices, and the creation/maintenance of progeny or subjects.
