Householder Primacy and the Royal Duty of Punishment
आप पवित्र कर्म करनेवाले और महान् व्रतधारी हैं। मैंने अपराधको क्षमा करके आपको जानेकी आज्ञा दे दी। इसके सिवा, यदि दूसरी कामनाएँ आपके मनमें हों तो उन्हें बताइये, मैं आपकी आज्ञाका पालन करूँगा ।।
vyāsa uvāca | saṃchadyamāno brahmarṣiḥ pārthivena mahātmanā | nānyaṃ sa varayāmāsa tasmād daṇḍād ṛte varam ||
毗耶娑说道:“纵然大心之王苏丢牟那屡屡相劝,婆罗门仙人利奇多也不求别的恩赐——唯求那本应受的刑罚。”
व्यास उवाच
That dharma is protected not only by forgiveness but also by appropriate daṇḍa (punishment). A righteous person may refuse extra rewards and instead insist on a fitting consequence, so that moral responsibility and social order are maintained.
Vyāsa narrates that a great king repeatedly urges a brahmarṣi to choose a boon, but the sage asks for nothing else—only that the previously mentioned punishment be carried out.
