Doṣa-Parīkṣā and Guṇa-Viveka
Examination of Faults and Discernment of the Guṇas
bhīṣma uvāca | manur uvāca—bṛhaspate! duḥkhopaghāte śārīre mānase cāpy upasthite | yasmin na śakyaṃ kartuṃ yatnas taṃ nānucintayet ||
When suffering—physical or mental—reaches a point where purposeful effort is impossible, one should not waste the mind in obsessive rumination; instead, one should withdraw attention from unproductive grief.
In Bhishma’s instruction during the Shanti Parva, he cites Manu speaking to Bṛhaspati, presenting a practical ethical maxim about responding to overwhelming affliction with mental restraint rather than futile brooding.
