Consciousness (Ātman) is distinct from the body-sense aggregate; due to proximity and association, the body seems conscious and the Self seems embodied, just as iron near fire seems to take on fire’s nature without truly becoming fire.
In Śānti Parva’s instruction, Bhīṣma continues his philosophical counsel to Yudhiṣṭhira, using a vivid analogy (fire and heated metal) to clarify how mistaken identification arises between the Self and the body.
