Adhyāya 199: Karma–Jñāna Causality and the Nirguṇa Brahman
Manu’s Instruction
prāṇināṁ jananaṁ satyaṁ satyaṁ saṁtatir eva ca | satyena vāyur abhyeti satyena tapate raviḥ ||
Satya is presented not merely as honest speech but as a sustaining principle: it underwrites birth, continuity of life, and even the regular functioning of nature. Therefore, truthfulness is framed as foundational to dharma and to the stability of the world.
In Śānti Parva’s didactic setting, a Brāhmaṇa speaker expounds on the supremacy of satya, using cosmic examples (wind and sun) to show that moral truth and cosmic order are inseparable and mutually reinforcing.
