Manu’s Instruction on Elemental Origination, Sense-Withdrawal, and Discrimination of the Supreme Nature
praharṣaḥ prītir ānandaḥ sukhaṁ saṁśānta-cittatā | kathaṁcid abhivartante ity ete sāttvikā guṇāḥ ||
Bhishma identifies certain inner experiences—uplift, affectionate joy, bliss, happiness, and mental tranquility—as indicators of sattva. They function as ethical-psychological signs that the mind is clear, balanced, and inclined toward dharmic conduct.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction on conduct and inner dispositions, Bhishma is teaching about the guṇas. Here he lists the experiential marks by which one can recognize the presence of sāttvika qualities within oneself.
