Adhyāya 193: Adjudication of the Comparable Fruits of Japa and Yoga
iha cintā bahuvidhā dharmādharmasya karmaṇaḥ | karmabhūmir iyaṃ loke iha kṛtvā śubhāśubham || śubheḥ śubham avāpnoti tathāśubham athānyathā ||
The verse teaches moral causality: this world is the arena where actions are performed, and actions reliably bear corresponding fruits—good deeds yield good results and evil deeds yield evil results, not the reverse.
Bharadvaja is speaking within the Shanti Parva’s instructional discourse, framing ethical inquiry about dharma and adharma and emphasizing the principle of karma and its fruits as a foundation for moral reasoning.
