The Jāpaka, Ikṣvāku, and the Dispute on Truth and Merit
वानप्रस्थानां च द्रव्योपस्कार इति प्रायशः खल्वेते साधव: साधुपथ्यौदना: स्वाध्यायप्रसड्धिन-स्तीर्थाभिगमनदेशदर्शनार्थ. पृथिवीं पर्यटन्ति । तेषां प्रत्युत्थानाभिगमनाभिवादनानसूयवाक्प्रदानसुखश- क्त्यासनसुखशयनाभ्यवहारसत्क्रिया चेति
Bharadvāja uvāca: vānaprasthānāṃ ca dravyopaskāra iti prāyaśaḥ khalv ete sādhavaḥ sādhupathyau-danāḥ svādhyāya-prasaktinas tīrthābhigamana-deśa-darśanārthaṃ pṛthivīṃ paryaṭanti. teṣāṃ pratyutthānābhigamanābhivādanān asūyā-vāk-pradāna-sukha-śakty-āsana-sukha-śayana-abhyavahāra-satkriyā ceti.
婆罗陀婆阇说道:“至于已入林居期(vānaprastha,林住者)的人,大抵并不以积聚财物与器用为其道。此等贤善之士,只求清净而有益之食,为了诵习吠陀(svādhyāya,自习经典)、朝礼圣地与观览诸方国土,周行遍历于大地之上。若有这样的林住者来到家中,主人当起身迎接,前行相接,并致恭敬礼拜;当以不挑过失之心与之言谈,出以嘉言;又当随己之力,供以安适之座、安适之榻与相称之食,如是尽其款待之礼。此即居家者(gṛhastha,家住者)对这等卓越之人的本分。”
भरद्वाज उवाच
Forest-dwellers (vānaprasthas) should not be oriented toward accumulating possessions; householders, in turn, must honour them through respectful reception, non-critical speech, and practical hospitality—seat, lodging, and food—according to their means.
Bharadvāja describes the typical conduct of vānaprasthas—wandering for study and pilgrimage—and then prescribes how a householder should behave when such renunciant travelers arrive: rise, greet, salute, speak kindly, and provide appropriate comforts and meals.
