Five Elements Inquiry and the Status of Plant Life
नात्यक्त्वा सुखमाप्रोति नात्यक्त्वा विन्दते परम् । नात्यक्त्वा चाभय: शेते त्यक्त्वा सर्व सुखी भव
nātyaktvā sukham āpnoti nātyaktvā vindate param | nātyaktvā cābhayaḥ śete tyaktvā sarvaḥ sukhī bhava ||
毗湿摩教诲:不行舍离,便不得真乐;不行舍离,便不能至于至上者;不行舍离,亦不能无畏而卧。故当舍尽诸执著,由此得真实安宁。
भीष्म उवाच
Renunciation (tyāga), especially of attachment, is presented as the necessary condition for three aims: genuine happiness, realization of the Supreme, and fearlessness. Letting go removes anxiety rooted in possession and craving, enabling inner peace and the highest spiritual attainment.
In Śānti Parva, Bhīṣma instructs the inquirer on dharma and the means to peace after the devastation of war. Here he emphasizes a practical spiritual ethic: abandon clinging to worldly objects and outcomes, and one becomes tranquil and secure within.
