Tri-varga Deliberation: Dharma, Artha, Kāma

Complete renunciation is not merely giving up external actions; it culminates in relinquishing attachment to austerity and even pride in learning. When conduct and mind are purified and one is detached from sense-pleasures, Self-knowledge ripens into liberation—described as attaining the imperishable abode of Brahman.
In the Śānti Parva’s instruction on dharma and liberation, Bhīṣma continues advising Yudhiṣṭhira about the path of the renouncer. This verse summarizes the ideal sannyāsin: one who methodically abandons all forms of doership and possession and thereby gains honor here and the highest posthumous goal.
