lābhālābhau sukhaduḥkhe ca tāta priyāpriye maraṇaṃ jīvitaṃ ca | samāni yeṣāṃ sthiravikramāṇāṃ bubhutsatāṃ sattvapathe sthitānām ||

Educational Q&A

Cultivate equanimity toward life’s opposites—gain/loss, pleasure/pain, liked/disliked, life/death—by abiding in sattva and seeking true understanding; honor and serve such steady, dharma-rooted people because their discernment and speech about right and wrong are reliable.

In the Shanti Parva’s instruction section, Bhishma addresses the listener (traditionally Yudhishthira) and describes the qualities of spiritually mature, sattva-established seekers, urging respectful service to them and warning that many others merely talk without true insight.
