अज्ञान–लोभयोः परस्परहेतुत्वम्
Mutual Causality of Ignorance and Greed
एतदेव हि कार्पण्यं समग्रमसमीक्षितम् | यच्चेत् समी क्षयैव स्याद् भवेत् तस्मिंस्ततो गुण:
etad eva hi kārpaṇyaṁ samagram asamīkṣitam | yac cet samīkṣyaiva syād bhavet tasmiṁs tato guṇaḥ ||
商那迦说道:“此乃怯弱之过:不加先验审察,便将一事全盘承当而贸然起行。然若一切作为皆经细密省察而后发端,则此番审度反成其德。在伦理之道中,因迷乱而仓促行事当受责;能反复思辨、明辨取舍者,则被称颂为美德。”
शौनक उवाच
Acting without examining consequences and context is labeled kārpaṇya (weak, blameworthy irresolution), whereas acting after careful consideration (samīkṣya) is itself a guṇa (virtue) in the action.
Śaunaka comments in a didactic tone, contrasting unexamined, impulsive undertaking with reflective deliberation, framing the latter as ethically commendable within the Shānti Parva’s instruction on right conduct.
