Protection of the Refuge-Seeker: Opening of the Kapota Narrative
अनागतं विजानीयाद् यच्छेद् भयमुपस्थितम् । पुनर्वद्धिभयात् किंचिदनिवृत्तं निशामयेत्
anāgataṁ vijānīyād yac ched bhayam upasthitam | punar vṛddhi-bhayāt kiñcid anivṛttaṁ niśāmayet ||
毗湿摩说道:“当力求预知未至之患;而恐惧既已现于目前,便应设法抑制、压伏之。然而又当惧其被压之惧复又膨胀,故须视之为尚未尽除——因此常怀警醒。”
भीष्म उवाच
Foresee dangers before they arrive, restrain fear when it appears, and remain alert even after it seems controlled—because suppressed threats can revive.
In the Śānti Parva’s instruction on dharma and governance, Bhīṣma continues advising the listener on practical conduct: prudent anticipation, timely restraint, and sustained vigilance in the face of danger.
