Sauptika Parva, Adhyaya 8 — Dhṛṣṭadyumna-vadha and the Camp’s Nocturnal Rout

जग्मुः स्वानेव तत्राथ कालेनैव प्रचोदिता: । कितने ही मनुष्य निद्रामें अचेत पड़े थे और घोर अन्धकारसे घिर गये थे। वे सहसा उठकर कालसे प्रेरित हो आत्मीय जनोंका ही वध करने लगे || १०० $ ।।

tyaktvā dvārāṇi ca dvāḥ-sthās tathā gulmāni gaulmīkāḥ

三阇耶说道:他们弃下营门与守门之人,也弃下军中岗哨与其守卫,袭击者仍一路逼进——宛如夜袭之乱象:平日的防护尽皆崩解,暴力不分彼此地蔓延。此颂凸显夜间屠戮在伦理上的骇人之处:当恐惧与命运驱使众人时,连本为约束伤害而设的界限也被抛诸脑后。
