Educational Q&A

The verse highlights an ethical warning: arrogance fueled by perceived divine favor (a boon) can lead to reckless aggression. Bhishma frames Shishupala’s challenge as arising from moral fault (pāpa) and poor discernment (sumandadhī), implying that true dharma requires humility and right judgment, not pride-driven hostility.

Bhishma addresses Bhimasena and identifies Shishupala as the instigator. He explains that Shishupala, emboldened and made arrogant by a boon associated with Govinda (Krishna), is openly calling Bhima to fight—setting the stage for confrontation and testing the assembly’s restraint and dharmic order.
