Śiśupāla-nigraha-prastāva: Yudhiṣṭhira’s Conciliation and Bhīṣma’s Defense of Kṛṣṇa

Book 2, Chapter 35

draṣṭakāmāḥ sabhāṃ caiva dharmarājaṃ yudhiṣṭhiram | na kaścid āharat tatra sahasrāvaram arhaṇam ||

Educational Q&A

Public honor in a dharmic kingship is expressed through appropriate generosity: the visitors’ minimum offering signifies recognition of Yudhiṣṭhira’s moral authority and the social expectation that respect be shown through worthy gifts.

Kings arrive to see Yudhiṣṭhira and his famed assembly hall; the narration emphasizes the grandeur of the occasion by noting that every visitor brings an honor-gift valued at no less than a thousand (gold coins).
